Hopes for new 'centralised' tip in Dudley
Dudley residents could get a new tip to cut travelling time if the councillor in charge gets his way.
Cllr Damian Corfield, Dudley Council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, told October’s meeting of the authority a review of household waste recycling centre (HWRC) services in Dudley was under way and he hoped for a new facility in the middle of the borough.
The council currently only operates one tip, located in Birmingham Street, Stourbridge, which is causing concern for the borough’s Labour group leader, Cllr Adam Aston.
Cllr Aston said: “I live in the north of the borough, and I remember the halcyon days when residents could dispose of their rubbish without having to plan it a week in advance — or embark on a tortuous journey all the way to Stourbridge.
“Like many of my constituents, I recently discovered just how difficult it has become to book a slot at the Stourbridge tip — made even worse by the rather inspired decision to close it on a Tuesday.”
Cllr Corfield said: “My vision is that we have a more centralised HWRC provision which is obviously more accessible for all residents.
“The time scale to actively deliver that is quite a number of years so part of the review and part of the waste collection service that we are all getting to know about will be to put a temporary offering in the north of the borough.”
Cllr Aston wondered if the Conservative cabinet member would commit to reintroduction of pop-up tips in the north of the borough, which he said were incredibly well-received in the area and were ‘something resembling an adequate level of service’.
Cllr Corfield would not give a firm commitment, saying it was part of the review but declared he was a ‘big fan’ of pop-up tips and if they were to return councillors would be told ‘in due course’.
