The attraction launched the Covid-19 Animal Care Fund last year after losing around £100,000 per week due to being closed.

Now the target has hit £50,000 – a year on from them closing down – with chiefs praising people for donating to their cause.

A spokesman said: "You’re amazing! Our Justgiving page has just passed the £50K mark. Thank you for your generosity and for loving DZC as much as we do."

Bosses at the attraction are aiming to reopen on April 12 – but some indoor enclosures will remain closed until May.
