People who live and work in the Smethwick ward are being urged to be extra careful.

The rate of infection in Smethwick ward is 171 per 100,000 people, which is twice as high as the average rate for Sandwell as a whole. There have been 26 new cases in the last seven days of data.

Smethwick ward is part of wider Smethwick town area. The ward includes the Londonderry Lane, Stony Lane and Manor Road areas and part of Thimblemill Road, as well as Smethwick Hall Park, Harry Mitchell Park and Uplands Cemetery.

Dr Lisa McNally, Sandwell’s director of public health, said: “We are urging people in Smethwick ward, as well as the rest of Sandwell, to keep being careful to avoid infection.

“Although rates have fallen dramatically in Sandwell since January, we still have some areas for concern where the number of people testing positive in the past week has increased. This includes the Smethwick ward.

“There is no room for complacency, Covid-19 is a killer virus and we need everyone to be on the guard to protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.”

Councillor Maria Crompton, deputy leader Sandwell Council, said: “While we are pleased infection rates have come down since January, the virus is still here, it’s still deadly and it can be easily passed on if the rules aren’t followed.

“I urge all residents to continue to follow the government rules and stay at home unless it's essential to go out.

“Please self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms – this can save lives.

“For those who do have to leave home such as to go to work or take children to school, please ensure you stay at least 2 metres apart, wear a face covering where required and wash or sanitise hands.”

Anyone showing symptoms must self-isolate and book a Covid-19 test at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.
