A landmark Wolverhampton nightclub that closed shortly after a reveller was murdered outside will reopen within weeks after reverting back to its original name, bosses have said.

Uberra will relaunch under its original name The Canal Club. The new sign has now gone up outside the historic premises.

Owner Kultar Dale said the club had undergone a £100,000 refurbishment, with brand new furniture and lighting before the grand reopening.

Uberra opened its doors in December last year following a £250,000 refurbishment but shut soon after 23-year-old Tom Kirwan was fatally stabbed outside in July. Mr Dale, who owns Dale Investments, said: "It was horrible what happened to Tom and I sympathise with his family. He was a young lad with a future in front of him.

"Uberra is no longer there anymore, it's now The Canal Club.

"We are doing the few last touches to the club and it should open in the next few weeks."

Mr Dale said the club would be aimed at the over-25s and that 100 VIP cards would be issued to regulars for access to the champagne bar.

The new club will also have a strict dress code. The relaunch will secure around 30 jobs, with hopes of the creation of another 50 in future.

Mr Dale added: "The club needed updating. It's more modern now. We are looking forward to the reopening.

"We want people to come and enjoy themselves and go away happy."

The former British Waterways depot on the corner of Ring Road St David's and Wednesfield Road was formerly Miss Moneypenny's. It closed in 2009 before reopening as Uberra.

Four men and one woman were arrested in connection with Mr Kirwan's murder. They answered bail yesterday and were re-bailed by police.
