Shock at Wolverhampton crash which left boy seriously injured

A community has spoken of its shock following an accident which left a schoolboy seriously injured after he was hit by a car in Wolverhampton.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon on Warstones Road in Penn, when the boy, aged 12, was hit by a black Audi.

He was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital with head injuries, where he remains in a stable condition today.

The road was closed shortly after the collision took place until late last night between Pinfold Lane and Warstones Drive as police carried out their investigations.

Four police cars, a van and a forensics vehicle were on site yesterday evening, with investigators combing the scene for evidence and knocking doors, speaking to witnesses.

The boy is believed to live nearby.

Rob Boyd, who lives on Warstones Road, said: "My son knows him but they go to different schools. A boy my son plays football with was with him at the time. He's absolutely distraught.

"It really is shocking, nobody expected something like this to happen.

"It's shocked the whole community, everyone has been outside trying to find out what's happened and trying to find out how he is and if he's going to be okay."

Navi Shetra, who works as a shop assistant in a nearby convenience store, said: "He was just a young boy, he was in the shop all the time. I think he had been playing outside with his friend. It's really bad. He's a really lovely kid, he's always smiling."

Sonny Singh, another Warstones Road resident, said: "It was a real shock to hear about it. We were out at the time but came home later to see a big part of the street cordoned off and police vehicles everywhere."

Sergeant Paul Hughes, from West Midlands Police's collision investigation unit, said: "At approximately 3.45pm police were notified of a serious road traffic collision on Warstones Road, Wolverhampton.

Distraught

"It involved a car and a child. The child was treated at the scene before being taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"The driver of the car remained at the scene and has been assisting the police.

"The investigation is in its early stages and I would ask for any witnesses who have not spoken to us to contact myself or my team."

Witnesses are asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101.
