Walsall crash: Man dies from injuries after being hit by bin lorry

A man has died after being struck by a bin lorry in Walsall prompting a police investigation.

Police were called to the scene around 1.45pm just outside Walsall Manor Hospital, in Pleck Road, yesterday.

The 76-year-old man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

Specially trained officers are supporting the man's family.

The driver of the lorry, operated by waste management firm Biffa, is helping officers with their investigation.

Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The driver of the lorry was spoken to at the scene and is assisting our investigation.

"We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened and hasn't yet spoken to us.

"Our thoughts remain with the gentleman's family at this sad time."

Officers put cordons in place while emergency services investigated and the man was treated for his injuries.

Biffa issued a statement confirming one of its lorries had been involved in the incident.

The statement said: "The police are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident and Biffa is fully co-operating with the police in this matter."
