Coseley chemical spill: Five people taken to hospital after 1,000 litres of acid pour from lorry
Five people have been taken to hospital after 1,000 litres of acid spilled from a lorry causing disruption in Coseley.
Residents and businesses have been advised to keep windows and doors closed while emergency teams sealed off the area this afternoon
Around 70 firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service are working alongside Environment Agency staff to contain the spill in Anchor Lane, Deepfields.
Emergency services were called at 11.38am after reports that hydrochloric acid was pouring from a tank on the lorry.
The fire service's Hazmat team are using specialist equipment to try to contain the spillage.
Anchor Lane and Meadow Lane junction to Biddings Lane and Shaw Road is closed to traffic with diversions in place at the moment.
A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We had a call at 11.38am which said what is believed to be hydrochloric acid was pouring out of a tank on a vehicle.
"They estimate that there's around 1,000 litres been spilled.
"Surrounding homes and businesses have been advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut.
"Hazmat experts are working with fire crews to draw up an action plan to deal with the situation."
Police have also been called to help control traffic, while West Midlands Ambulance Service have been alerted as a precaution, the spokesman added.
West Midlands Police's Wolverhampton Inspector Peter Haywood said: "We are maintaining outer cordons.
He added: "It is safe for the public but please can they keep their doors and windows closed and not venture out to the site or the vicinity at this time."
