And now two West Midlands Ambulance staff have resigned after the accident at the junction of Cambridge Road and Holly Hall Road.

The 82-year-old man was taken to Russells Hall Hospital, where police say he remains with serious injuries but in a stable condition.

It is believed that the ambulance driver had been reversing when the accident occurred.

Police say nobody has been arrested in connection with the incident.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that an ambulance was involved in a road traffic collision.

Claire Brown, West Midlands Ambulance spokesperson, said: "The Trust takes any incident involving an emergency vehicle very seriously and an internal investigation is being carried out.

"The Trust can confirm that two members of staff have since resigned. The Trust continues to work with West Midlands Police as part of their ongoing investigation."

Dudley councillors from across the political divide called for an independent investigation into the incident, which happened on June 21 at 12.40pm.

Councillor Paul Brothwood said: "I hope that an independent review is carried out following this.

"We need an open and transparent investigation to ensure that any mistakes that may have been made aren't repeated.

"We need to remember that the Ambulance Service do a great job and that something like this happening is a great concern.

"The emergency services are there to help and serve the people and hopefully it is not the stress of this incident that may have caused the staff to resign. Hopefully the gentleman makes a quick recovery."

Councillor Qadar Zada said: "It is really regrettable that this has taken place with a gentleman of that age and its a very disappointing occurrence.

"It is important now that an open investigation takes place.

"The decision around the staff resigning is something that they have chosen to do but we now need to wait and see the outcome of this to fully understand and listen to what has happened.

"Hopefully the gentleman recovers speedily and can also help with the investigation."

Councillor Elaine Taylor, also from the ward which the incident happened in, added: "I hope that the poor man is going survive."
