Window cleaner helps save woman, 89, as two fires hit Walsall estate

Two fires broke out on one Walsall estate this morning, leaving homes damaged and two elderly women checked for smoke inhalation.

The first of the two fires broke out at around 10am at Yemscroft Flats on Lichfield Road, Rushall, after an 89 year old woman's toaster caught fire.

Window cleaner Darren Fox, who had been working nearby, saw smoke coming from the window of the lady before trying to get her attention by banging on her window.

After getting the attention of the lady, who had not noticed the fire from a different room, he got her out of the building before alerting emergency services.

This was followed at around 11am, where crews visited the home of another woman in her 80s to deal with a fire started by a candle at Rushall Manor Road.

Three crews battled the blaze, which badly damaged the woman's dining room, as well as causing fire damage throughout the rest of her house.
