Police were called to Cat and Kittens Lane in Bushbury at 12.30pm yesterday after the grim discovery in a car near the junction with Greenfield Lane.

A dog that was also in the car is now being cared for.

The deaths of the man and woman, aged 42 and 46 respectively and who are from Wolverhampton, are not being treated as suspicious, police said on Thursday morning.

West Midlands Police said post mortems were due to take place this afternoon.

Spokeswoman Sarah Astbury said: "Police are investigating after two bodies were found in a car on Cat and Kittens Lane in Bushbury. The bodies have not been formally identified.

"Officers are currently in the process of tracing family members. A dog has been removed from the car and has been taken to a local vet to be checked over.

"The area has been sealed off while inquiries are carried out."

Police at the scene yesterday

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed a crew was called shortly before 12.35pm. "On arrival, crews found two patients, a man and a woman, both of whom were inside a car," the spokesman said.

"Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either of them and they were confirmed dead at the scene."

The police cordon was in place at the entrance to the car park at the Greenfield Golf Club, which is off a small road leading off Cat and Kittens Lane.

The club is next to a National Grid Base – but no other buildings are in the immediate vicinity.

No-one was at the golf club and a sign said the waterlogged course was closed due to weather conditions.

However, a message left on an answer machine said: "Due to a police incident, I'm sorry the course will be closed until further notice."

Bushbury North Councillor Ian Angus said: "It seems like awful, tragic circumstances. I would urge people not to speculate and await the outcome of the police investigation."

Councillor Daniel Warren, who also represents the same ward, said: "It is tragic, it is an unknown for Bushbury.

"I am completely shocked. My condolences go to the family of the people.

"I would appeal for anyone with any information to go to the police to help them in this very sad and tragic case."
