Rush hour chaos as fatal crash shuts M6 in West Midlands
A crash between a lorry and a car on the M6 in which one person has died has closed the motorway northbound, and shut two lanes on the southbound carriageway.
The 26-year-old driver of the blue Saab 9-3 was confirmed dead at the scene, while the lorry driver sustained minor injuries.
The incident which happened between Junctions 5 for Castle Bromwich and 6 for Birmingham on the M6 northbound at 1.55am this morning has closed the carriageway.
Highways England said that road repair work is needed and that the carriageway is likely to remain closed until 10pm tonight.
There are currently delays of 50 minutes from Junction 4 for Coleshill.
Two lanes on the southbound carriageway were closed following the accident, although they have now reopened and delays have cleared.
Roadside investigation work has now been completed, and the recovery of vehicles and removal of debris is underway.
PC Chris Ridge from West Midlands Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We understand there were other vehicles on that section of the motorway at the time who may have witnessed what led up to the collision or the impact itself.
"We have spoken to some drivers who stopped at the scene but it's important that anyone who was driving nearby at the time to get in touch…they may have a key bit of information that will help our investigation."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit on the 101 number.
Motorists are advised to follow the "Hollow Circle" diversion symbol leaving the M6 at J5, take the exit to A452 (north). At the junction with the A47 follow the A47 westbound, continue to B4137. Continue on the B4137 (west) to the junction with the A5127 (Lichfield Road). Remain on the A5127 to 'Salford's Circus' and take the exit for M6 North.
