The 66-year-old man was hit by a red Vauxhall Corsa in High Street Amblecote at the junction of Brettell Lane at 6.50pm yesterday evening.

A 25-year-old man, who was the driver of the Corsa which hit the man, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving. He was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Police would also like to speak to the driver of a dark coloured 4x4 which was in the area at the time. The driver stopped at the scene of the crash, but left a short time later.

Chris Kowalik, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "The man, a pedestrian, had suffered serious injuries. Despite their best efforts, the ambulance crews couldn't save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

Sergeant Alan Wood, from West Midlands Police's force's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The road was very busy last night and we are appealing to the driver of a black 4x4 who was in the area at the time of the collision to come forward.

"The driver would have been turning into Brettell Lane from High Street, Amblecote at around the time of the collision. The 4 x 4 driver did stop initially at the scene but left a short time later. We are now appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

"Our thoughts remain with the family of the man who lost his life and specialist officers continue to liaise with them."

Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101. Alternatively people can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers the independent charity on 0800 555 111.
