Dozens of firefighters were tackling a major blaze in Kidderminster this afternoon, which saw one person injured and smoke billowing into the sky for miles around.

Black smoke was pouring upwards from the scene in the Broad Street area of Horsefair.

The blaze was at an industrial estate and involved three to four independent car repair and manufacture units.

One worker suffered a minor injury attempting to fight the fire.

Thirty-five firefighters attended the scene and fought the fire from the front and rear of the building, following a call at 1.40pm.

Seven fire engines were used, from Hereford and Worcester, West Midlands and Staffordshire.

The blaze was under control by 5pm, when crews began damping the scene down.

Broad Street was closed at the junction with Queen Street, while Queen Street was closed between Broad Street and Larkhill.

Public transport services were also disrupted.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Service group commander Dan Quinn urged members of the public to stay indoors and keep windows closed to avoid smoke.

Ian Gray, director of Hickman Leisure Services in Willenhall, was heading back from a business trip to Glades Leisure Centre in Kidderminster when he saw the fire.

He said: "I was driving down the road and within moments black smoke was starting to increase and I could see that people were rushing to the scene - but as you got closer the place was just engulfed in smoke.

"I had to quickly reverse as the smoke even got into my car.

"The whole of Kidderminster must be covered now, it seems that there are houses nearby as it was on low ground, so no doubt they'll be smoke logged too.

"I've seen lots of fire engines on my way back to Wolverhampton heading towards that route."

Twitter users and emergency services shared their images of the blaze:
