Tortoises killed and bedroom damaged in Bilston fires

Two pet tortoises were killed when fire ripped through a bedroom in a Wolverhampton home.

Fire crews from Tipton and Bilston were called to Georgina Avenue in Bradley, Bilston, at around 4.30am today.

They spent an hour controlling the blaze, which had taken hold in an upstairs bedroom of the semi-detached house.

Two dead tortoises were found in the room. It is thought that they died as a result of the smoke.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

On Saturday, a family managed to put out a blaze started by a candle that set fire to toys in a bedroom at a house in Bilston.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Lunt Road, Bilston, at around 5pm.

The fire, which is thought to have been caused by an unattended tea light candle in a bedroom at the back of the house, had been extinguished by the time fire crews arrived.

There was minimal damage and no one was injured.

Firefighters from Bilston tweeted this update about the blaze.

Meanwhile, fire tore through piles of rubbish at a skip yard in Wolverhampton.

The blaze affected around two tonnes of waste materials at the yard at the Monmore Road Trading Estate, Monmore Road, Bilston.

Fire crews spent 50 minutes controlling the blaze, which had taken hold in a large open yard at around 2.30pm on Saturday.

It is thought the fire was started accidentally.
