The collision in Hagley happened on the Stourbridge Road at 8.50am yesterday. Off-duty paramedic officers saw the crash en route to work and immediately stopped on seeing the extent of the damage to the car. They were later joined by an ambulance and another paramedic officer.

Ambulance staff quickly discovered the coach driver had been working on the engine at the rear of the vehicle moments before the collision. A quick walk to fetch tools meant he avoided the crash.

The car driver meanwhile only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

John Hawker, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "Considering the severe damage to the vehicle, the driver was extremely fortunate not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."
