The man sustained serious head injuries after falling from the bridge in Railway Drive – in between the bus and railway stations – onto the bus lane below in Ring Road St Davids.

The road was closed to allow the air ambulance to land on the central reservation near The Lighthouse Cinema.

The drama unfolded shortly after 10.50am.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was treated by paramedics and then airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham at 11.40am in a serious condition.

Traffic was closed in both directions in Ring Road St Davids from Bilston Street Island to the junction with Wednesfield Road – near to the Canal Club – until 11.45am.

Witnesses described the dramatic aftermath when emergency services descended on the city centre.

Hillary Prosser, from Wanderers Avenue in Blakenhall, said: "It was quite dramatic – the police moved everyone from that side of the bridge facing the bus station and cordoned off the area.

"When I came it had just happened and the helicopter was hovering over the area trying to land." Anthony Cadman, aged 30 and from Wednesfield, added: "Apparently the man was just standing there and then the next thing you know the police and ambulance cars were rushing over.We hope he's okay."

The man also suffered chest and pelvic injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said an ambulance crew and a responder paramedic attended the scene, as well as the air ambulance.

He added: "A man, believed to be in his 30s, had reportedly been injured after falling from a bridge."

National Express West Midlands confirmed that one of their buses was on the road at the time the man fell.
