The incident came to light in a tweet by Walsall police officer Richard Stanley who wrote: "Very odd afternoon spent investigating a report of two grandmothers who have had a punch up."

Pc Stanley told the Express & Star of the Friday incident: "There was a disorder in the street where a brawl was taking place and a lot of screaming was going on.

"I think it was a case of tempers fraying after a few drinks at the end of a long, hot day."

He said no arrests had been made and no one was seriously hurt although inquiries into the brawl were continuing.

The women had fallen out over their grandchildren.
