Traffic built up after the Tarmac lorry and the green Rover 200 collided on the dual carriageway into Wolverhampton city centre.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene, near to the Co-op store, at 9.30am, causing queues of traffic to back up to junction two of the M54.

Witnesses said the busy road was often the scene of accidents and that parked cars along the carriageway did not help.

Shop assistant Angela Gee, aged 43, of Marsh Lane said: "What you have is a fast road, a dual carriage and lots of shops, and you don't usually get that and that's why you have problems. If you bring back the red route it will hit trade hard and that's not we want.

"There needs to be more off-road parking but where do you put them? There's too much going on down this road with a round-about and a pelican crossing – that's why there are so many accidents."

West Midlands Police spokesman Lee Page said the road was cleared by 10.30am. He added that no-one involved suffered any serious injuries.

Meanwhile a man in his 60s was taken to hospital after his car flipped over and crashed into a tree near Shifnal.

The silver car drifted across the road before going up the kerb, rolling over and hitting a tree on Newport Road close to Tong, according to witnesses.

The driver was treated for minor head injuries at the scene before being taken to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton.

The crash just before 7.30pm yesterday.
