Queen Mary’s High School, a girls grammar school in Upper Forster Street, usually has an annual prize-giving ceremony at Walsall Town Hall but a ceremony there had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

Instead the school decided to make the presentations in school this week during assemblies and form time to maintain year group bubbles.

The awards highlight the achievements of students who were in year 12 last year and are now in year 13, and those who were in year 10 last year and are now in Year 11.

They have been given for “progress and achievement” and “service to their house”.

Progress and achievement awards were presented to Sonya Kainth, Jade Maycock, Sophie Phung and Mia Pitt.

For service to their house - Queen Mary’s High School’s houses are named after renowned 19th century female authors - awards were presented to Sami Kandil (Austen), Abigail Poxon (Eliot), Krisztina Hovorka (Shelley) and Eve Borkowy (Bronte).

Miss Borkowy was a double winner as she was also presented with a special prize, the Spirit of Queen Mary’s awarded by the school’s Old Girls’ Club.

Headteacher Dr Alison Bruton said: “We are delighted to present these awards particularly as these students faced the difficulties of studying during the Covid pandemic.

“They have done extremely well in their learning both in school and working tremendously hard when away from school and we are very proud of them.”
