Nominations are now open for the Wolverhampton Young Citizen of the Year awards, which recognise the achievements of those who have supported others in their community.

The awards, which have run since 2014, had to be cancelled last year due to the pandemic, but organisers are pressing ahead in 2021 with safety measures in place.

This year's awards have been extended to include two ages ranges, 13 to 18 and 19 to 25. Organisers are looking to recognise the efforts of those who have gone out of their way to help others.

Nominees must live, study or work within the boundaries of Wolverhampton, and can be put forward by family members, friends, teachers, employers, youth leaders and other professionals.

Roger Timbrell, chairman of the organising committee, said: "The 2020 awards had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. We have decided to go ahead in 2021 and modify arrangements, as restrictions allow.

"I urge anyone who knows a young person who deserves to be recognised for helping others during the pandemic or who has demonstrated good citizenship to nominate them."

The awards are dedicated to former city education chief Tom Warren. They are sponsored by the city's five Rotary Clubs and run in partnership with the Wolverhampton Council, the Express & Star, Wolves Foundation, and supported by Carvers Building Supplies and The James Beattie Trust.

Nomination close on May 31 and can be made at www.wolverhamptonyoungcitizen.org.uk.

Subject to Covid restrictions an awards ceremony will be held early in July.
