Raihan Ahmed has been charged with death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance following the incident in the Digbeth area of Birmingham on Sunday.

National Express driver Ghulam Nabi was walking along the pavement when he was struck by a car on Great Barr Street at the crossroads with Heath Mill Lane.

The 61-year-old received serious injuries and died at the scene despite the best efforts of nearby members of the public.

Ahmed, 19 and of Langdale Road, Birmingham, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday.

National Express, who Mr Nabi had worked for since 1994, paid tribute to him saying: "Nabi would have a laugh with all his colleagues and he was especially respected by our younger drivers - they called him Uncle and he was a fantastic mentor to them.

"Nabi was very much appreciated by our customers, who would get in touch to tell us what a friendly driver he was," the company added.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Anyone with information, who’s not yet spoken to us, is asked to contact us via Live Chat on our website, or call 101, quoting log 1411 of 29 August.
