Lucille Downer was killed when she was attacked by the dogs which got into her back garden in Rowley Regis through a hole in the fence on Good Friday.

Neighbours rushed to her aid after the dogs escaped at around 3.20pm but the 85-year-old was subjected to a "sustained attack" and was confirmed dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

The dogs were tranquilised after the attack and seized by police before being "humanely destroyed".

Neighbours reported that they looked like pit bulls but police are still yet to confirm the breed three days on from the attack.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "Further analysis will take place to determine what breed they were."

A 43-year-old man alleged to be the owner of dogs dangerously out of control was arrested just after the attack but has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

A post mortem was also due to be carried out to establish the exact cause of Mrs Downer's death.
