WATCH: Boy racers who ploughed into innocent man's car locked up

Three boy racers have been jailed after causing a crash which left a driver seriously injured while speeding through the West Midlands.

James-Jay Walters, Daniel Tandy and Jack Coyne were racing at twice the speed limit in a 30mph zone in Solihull when Walters ploughed into the innocent driver who was going around a roundabout.

The young men are all now behind bars, while a teenage passenger from one of the cars car has been given a suspended sentence after attempting to cover up who one of the drivers was.

CCTV footage of the July 2019 crash has been shared by West Midlands Police with the permission of the crash victim's family.

In the footage, the Ford Fiesta, BMW and Audi driven be the three men can be seen overtaking and cutting vehicles up as they raced at speeds of up to 75mph along Stratford Road in Shirley.

Forensic collision specialists found that Walters, who was behind the wheel of the Fiesta, was driving at 62mph when he crashed into the victim's Audi at a roundabout known locally as Porcelanosa roundabout.

The video shows how the Fiesta smashed into the side of the man's car, knocking it onto its side and into nearby signposts.

The driver, aged in his 60s, was left seriously injured and is still recovering nearly two years later, West Midlands Police said.

Walters, 18 and from Gorleston Road, Yardley Wood, was locked up for 18 months after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Tandy, 23, from Highters Road, Highters Heath, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was locked up for 20 months.

Coyne, 18 and from Sisefield Road, Kings Norton, also admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was locked up for three years after being sentenced for several other offences including aggravated and attempted theft.

Passenger Morgan Cotterill, 19 and from Jervoise Drive, Northfield, was given a six-month sentence for perverting for course of justice, which was suspended for 18 months.

Pc Anneka Morgan, from the West Midlands Police serious collision investigation unit, said: “The excess speed and the sheer dangerousness of the driving demonstrated by all three drivers in this case is totally unacceptable. The consequences of what happened that night are simply tragic and have left a man with life-changing injuries.

“These young men were egging each other along while driving recklessly. Despite only one car being involved in the physical collision, we’ve been able to prove that their joint actions meant they were all culpable.

“An innocent man has been left with horrific injuries from which he will never completely recover. We hope that today’s sentences send a clear message that competitive racing is not acceptable. It’s dangerous and has devastating consequences. What these youngsters naively saw as fun has led to very serious repercussions.

“Our message is clear, driving like this is dangerous and illegal."
