A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a teenager was killed when he was set upon by a group of young people.
The 15-year-old victim, named today as Keon Lincoln, was set upon by the group in Linwood Road, in Handsworth, Birmingham, at around 3.30pm on Thursday.
Keon was taken to hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.
The 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives are continuing to trace the other individuals involved. Witnesses said shots were heard and the suspects were armed with knives.
Officers believe the group fled in a white car which crashed into a house in Wheeler Street, Lozells.
Detective Chief Inspector Alastair Orencas, from West Midlands Police’s homicide team, said: “The death of Keon has shocked the whole community and we have increased our patrols in the area.
“We are determined to apprehend those responsible for his death and bring them to justice, so I would personally appeal to anyone who is withholding information out of misguided loyalty to the offenders, to come forward.
"A teenage boy has died in the most violent of circumstances and we urge you to give us any information you have.”
A resident of Linwood Road said she had not been at home at the time of the incident, but was shocked to hear someone had been killed.
The NHS worker, who did not give her name, said: “We’ve lived here 45 years and I’ve never heard of anything like this.
“It’s just shocking and really, really sad.”
A post-mortem examination was due to take place.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a number of calls to Linwood Road in Handsworth, Birmingham at 3.39pm on Thursday afternoon.
"Three ambulances, a paramedic officer, a critical care paramedic and a BASICS emergency doctor attended and arrived on scene to find a male requiring emergency treatment.
"Ambulance crews provided advanced trauma care on scene before conveying him to hospital on blue lights, where he later sadly passed away.”
