Officers were called to Summer Lane between Snow Hill and Newtown at around 7.55pm on Tuesday to reports of the attack.

A 26-year-old man was found with life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated and he died today.

A post-mortem will take place in due course to establish a cause of death.

No arrests have been made but officers continue to investigate several lines of inquiry.

Detective Inspector Paul Joyce, from the force's CID, said: "Despite the best efforts of the medical staff the man's injuries were so severe that he unfortunately died and we have now launched an murder investigation.

"We are in the process of contacting the man's family and will not be in a position to name him until this has been concluded and we have formally identified him.

"We continue to investigate the circumstances that led to his death, CCTV is being trawled and we are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident to come forward.

"I would also like to appeal directly to the person responsible, to do the right thing and to come forward.

"We have several lines of enquiry and it is only a matter of time before we come knocking at your door."

The stabbing was the second such incident in the city in 48 hours.

It came just hours after a teenage was stabbed as violence flared near Marks and Spencers and the Bullring at around midnight on Monday.
