The 28-year-old suspect was arrested by British Transport Police officers on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

The man, who was held in the Acocks Green area of Birmingham, is currently in police custody being interviewed by detectives.

The victim, 22, was left needing hospital treatment after the tram stop attack, which happened on July 22.

Today's arrest followed a fresh appeal for witnesses earlier this week which saw the publication of a photo of a suspect.

Det Insp Gareth Davies said: "I would like to thank everyone who came forward with information, which has led to this morning's arrest.

"Our enquiries into this incident continue and I would urge anyone who has more details about what happened, and who we have not yet spoken to, to contact us."
