Firefighters threatened with knife after alarm at Wolverhampton house

Firefighters were threatened with a knife this afternoon after being called to an alarm in Wolverhampton.

They were called to the property on Newhampton Road East, Whitmore Reans, where a man is said to have confronted them while holding the blade.

Firefighters retreated and called police at around 2.40pm.

West Midlands Police spokesman Lee Page said: "Officers attempted to negotiate with him.

"He's then attempted to start a fire, and our operational support unit entered the property and restrained him."

The 33-year-old was being assessed by paramedics this afternoon.

Photos from the scene showed people gathered on the street watching while police and ambulances blocked the road.
