PICTURED: Armed police swoop in Walsall town centre on Pelsall Co-op robbery suspect

This is the dramatic moment armed police swooped on Walsall town centre to arrest a man wanted over a 'handgun raid' on Pelsall's Co-op hours earlier.

The dramatic images show officers with automatic weapons in The Bridge area of the town centre, as shoppers look on.

It happened at around 4pm yesterday and the operation was linked to a raid on Co-op in Pelsall earlier in the day.

The lone raider struck at the High Street store at around 6.20am.

Staff were threatened but not injured, and police are investigating reports he was armed with a gun.

Today, West Midlands Police spokesman Pete Edney said: "A 34-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery at the Co-op in Pelsall which happened early yesterday morning.

"He was arrested on The Bridge in Walsall yesterday afternoon just before 4pm.

"He has now been released on police bail pending further enquiries"

Dc Neil Cunnington, from Walsall Police, said: "We would still like to hear from anyone who was in the area of the Co-op on Wednesday morning.

"No-one was hurt during the robbery and the shop has been examined for forensic evidence."

Officers continue to trawl CCTV in the surrounding area for clues.
