Girl killed in Great Barr van crash named as Zoe Shapiro

The teenage girl who died when she was hit by a van has been named as Zoe Shapiro.

Zoe, 17, was struck on Birmingham Road at around 8.30am on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old driver of the van was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

In a statement to parents on its website, Q3 Academy in Great Barr confirmed that Zoe had been a student.

Principal/Chief Executive Caroline Badyal said: "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have to inform you that one of our students was involved in a fatal road traffic accident this morning.

"This incident is now a police investigation and we are supporting the police with their investigation.

"The Academy is offering counselling to any students and staff affected in any way and we are working with Sandwell Council to make sure appropriate support is available. If you can provide any further information to the police about the incident, please call them on 101.

"I know you will support us in respecting the family's privacy. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this difficult time."

The A34 was closed between Peak House Road and Merrions Close for several hours as a result of the crash, while emergency services cleared the scene.

Pc Julie Lyman, from the force's Collision Investigation Unit, said today: "Our investigation is progressing, but we would still like to hear from anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to an officer.

"Specialist officers from our Family Liaison Unit continue to support Zoe's family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time."

Tributes flooded in on Facebook after news of the youngster's death.

Kay Ryan Lester said: "Can't sleep knowing that your not here. I know your in a better place but I miss you like crazy and I love you to pieces you're irreplaceable, I love you to pieces my beautiful best friend, sleep tight princess."

Isabella Hanley-Hall added: "Rest in peace. You were always one of the most down to earth and genuine girls I've ever met and always had a smile on your face, never failed to make me laugh!! Sleep tight darling, thoughts are with you and your family."
