No one was injured in the incident which took place as officers carried out a warrant and arrested the 22-year-old for possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

The warrant was carried out at a property in South Road, Hockley, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He was further arrested for drug offences and has been bailed with strict conditions while further enquiries take place.

West Midlands Police have also launched an internal investigation following the 'unintentional discharge of a police firearm'.

Chief Superintendent Dave Sturman, Head of Operations, said: "Following the arrest at the house, police were searching the property, when there was an unintentional discharge of a firearm by one of our armed officers.

"No-one was injured during the incident and there was only minor damage caused to the inside of the house."

The matter was referred to the force's professional standards department, who made a voluntary referral to the IPCC.

The officer has been placed on non-operational firearm duties while the investigation into the incident is on-going.
