Armed robbery suspects held minutes after Asda Darlaston staff threatened with tools

Four armed robbery suspects were held today minutes after a raid on Asda in Darlaston by a gang who threatened staff with a wrench and crowbar.

Raiders wearing tights over their faces ran into Asda in Darlaston at 4.30am, but police had been monitoring the gang and were waiting to pounce.

Inspector Ben West from West Midlands Police's Force CID, said: "We've been probing a group of men suspected of involvement in shop robberies in the Black Country.

"Officers were in the right place at the right time this morning to move in and make swift arrests.

"The group had been in the store for little more than a minute and were starting to corral staff when our officers made a timely appearance.

Officers are searching for a fifth suspect who is believed to have been in a black Ford Focus ST with white stripes.

Insp West said: "Inquiries are on-going to trace that vehicle and I'd urge anyone with information on its whereabouts, or who may have seen it in the Darlaston area just after 4.30am, to contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police's Priorities Team in Force CID on 101.
