A man aged 40 has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after paramedics were called to reports of someone being injured at a property on Standbridge Way yesterday.

Paramedics pronounced the woman, who was in her 40s, dead and police were called at around 2.30pm. The suspect was arrested at the scene and was being questioned by police today.

The house has been cordoned off for a forensic examination and police remained at the scene today.

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the inquiry at this stage.

The discovery came just over 24 hours after a man's body was found at a flat in Fisher Street, around one mile away.

They are not believed to be linked.

Residents living near to the Standbridge Way house spoke of their shock over what had happened.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said he believed a Polish family lived at the address.

"I think they have lived there for around five years. I knew them to say the occasional hello to but they generally kept themselves to themselves. As far as I know they rented the house."

Another resident said: "It is unbelievable to hear something like this has happened. You don't expect something like this on your own doorstep. I think it has shaken everybody."

Det Insp Harry Harrison, from West Midlands Police's Homicide Team, said: "We're still in the early stages of this investigation and are piecing together exactly what happened yesterday afternoon."

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family, who are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

"If anyone in the area saw anything or has any information which they feel may assist us, I would ask them to get in touch with me and my team."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
