A passenger was subjected to a violent attack after allegedly asking a couple to stop their children throwing sweets.

The 21-year-old was travelling on the top deck of the No 24 bus along Birmingham's Broad Street when he was set upon by a man who lashed out with a series of punches, knees and kicks.

The injured passenger suffered a badly broken nose, facial cuts and bruises, and is also believed to have been squirted in the eyes with pepper spray before being assaulted.

Police yesterday arrested a woman on suspicion of sporadically joining in the attack on January 11.

She has been bailed until a date next month when she will return to a police station for further questioning.
