A former Walsall nightclub could be transformed into a new steakhouse restaurant if plans are given the go-ahead.

Applicant Sohib Hussain wants to convert the remaining part of the old Samra Social Club in Caldmore Green into a 50-seater eatery and create new jobs in the area.

The former club closed a few years ago and part of the building was taken over by a clothes shop but the rest of it has stayed unused.

Agents Lapworth Architects said the proposal, which is currently being considered by Walsall Council planners, would provide a boost for Caldmore and the local economy.

If the plan is given the go-ahead, the opening hours of the restaurant will be 11am to 4am seven days a week.

Michael Manraj Singh, of Lapworth Architects, said: “The proposal is to turn the current space used as a nightclub / social club into a 50-seater grilled food restaurant/steakhouse that also offers delivery options.

“The proposed restaurant will create a total of ten new jobs and will help dynamise the local economy by bringing underused premises into an economically viable use once more.

“The premises falls within the Caldmore Green Conservation Area. It is trite to observe that this Conservation Area is not uniformly special.

“Plainly, some elements of it are more characterful and special than others. Development may be unacceptable at a particularly historically worthy and sensitive location, but be acceptable elsewhere within.

“The change of use will improve the economic viability and vitality of the Caldmore Green shopping area, as a restaurant will offer a more sustainable use for the premises.

“Furthermore, Samra nightclub / social club had a licence until 5am, meaning the change of use should have little to no impact on the surrounding premises or neighbours’ amenity as the location is in an established area of retail, takeaway and leisure uses with little housing in the immediate surroundings.”
