West Midlands weather: Driver caught at 110 mph on motorway as heavy fog descends

Heavy fog has caused hazardous conditions for motorists - as police caught a driver hitting 110 mph on the motorway in Staffordshire.

Police branded a motorist 'simply irresponsible' for hitting the speeds with viability cut due to the fog.

The incident happened on the M6 Toll close to Norton Canes services close to Cannock this morning.

Officers from Central Motorway Police Group tweeted: "110mph on the toll road in thick fog.

"Simply irresponsible, stupid and dangerous. Slow down."

Police later tweeted that the driver had not been arrested but would receive a summons to attend court through the post.

Heavy fog will remain across parts of the Black Country and Staffordshire into the evening.

Temperatures reach 9C (48F) today but it will stay dry and cloudy into the evening and overnight.
