Mongrel Hope was found lying lifeless in an upstairs bedroom after his owner and three children had been helped to escape from the choking smoke that swept their home in Burbage Close, Heath Town, at around 10.30pm.

The father roused his three children – the eldest of which was nine – and all four were helped through a window to safety by a neighbour.

The family then told the fire crews that responded to the call from Fallings Park and Wolverhampton that their pet was unaccounted for.

Firefighters Sean Eatly and Dave Taylor donned breathing apparatus to search the semi-detached property and found Hope lying in an upstairs bedroom.

The apparently dead mutt was brought out of the house, given oxygen in the front garden and soon started to breath shallowly.

After ten minutes the dog opened its eyes and within 40 minutes was up and running around again.

"We were all really chuffed," said Fallings Park Watch Commander Tony Jackson.

The fire, which started after food had been left cooking on the stove, left the kitchen gutted and the whole property badly damaged by smoke.

The man and his three children were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.
