The animal's owner had fled the property in Wolverhampton before dialling 999. Emergency crews arrived at the house in Coton Road, Penn, at 10.45am to find the washing machine in flames.

Firefighters discovered the furry rodent in its cage in a back room and carried it to safety.

Watch manager Andy Howard, of Wolverhampton fire station, said the pet, fortunately, was unaffected by its ordeal.

The guinea pig was recovering at a neighbour's house while its owner was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Mr Howard said the fire was detected after she smelled fumes as there were no smoke alarms in the property.
