Severn Trent Water has unveiled the project which will take part in the Lanesfield area of the city and see more than seven miles of brand new water pipes. The work will start on March 29.

The improvement work is being carried out to ensure customers' water taps and toilets keep working.

Severn Trent spokesman Gareth Mead, said: "As water pipes get old, they can become weaker and crack, making them prone to leaks and bursts.

"We want to make sure our customers' water supply in Lanesfield is always there when they need it, that's why we're laying the brand new water pipes."

The first phase of the work will start on Brynmawr Road from the junction of Mount Road, working towards the junction of Beach Avenue.

The road will be closed for three weeks while the work is carried out,

Work will then move onto Beach Avenue, starting at the junction of Brynmawr Road to the junction of Woodcross Lane. This work will begin early April.

Mr Mead added: "This work is really important to make sure that water supplies for our customers are reliable going forward.

"We'll do all we can to help minimise disruption and keep everyone affected up to date with progress.

"We'd like to ask the local community for the patience they have shown while we put the new pipes in place.

"But once all of the work is complete, the area will have a modern water network that will last for many years to come."

Residents are invited to a drop-in session on the firm's customer bus, to find out more about the plans.

The bus will be parked outside the shops on Child's Avenue between 4pm and 7pm today.

Meanwhile, a three-month programme of roadworks is already taking place in the Parkfields area of the city.

The work started in January and once complete will see seven-and-a-half miles of pipes replaced.

Work is being carried out by Amey, with residents and motorists hit by a number of road closures.

In the most recent stage of the works, Bradley Road was closed on March 9 and will be closed for up to four weeks.

Severn Trent says the work will make water supplies in the area more reliable.

The company is also carrying out water main replacement work in Pond Lane, which will continue until April 10.

A road closure is in place.
