The red, female Dogue de Bordeaux, thought to be aged around six, was discovered by a member of the public in a coppice down a country lane alongside the A442 in the village of Quatt.

Around the dog's neck was some baler twine, as well as marks which indicated the dog had been strangled.

The body was collected by a dog warden on Monday last week, who contacted the RSPCA. The body is believed to have been there for at least two weeks.

As the dog had no collar and was not microchipped, it is difficult for the RSPCA to trace an owner.

RSPCA inspector Kelly Lake said: "It is worrying that this dog may have suffered a horrible death, as the twine and wounds around her neck suggest that she was strangled. She was a big dog and it would have taken a lot of effort to do this.
