Severe rush hour delays as roads closed after woman spotted on Birmingham bridge

A distressed woman on a bridge closed a major Birmingham road and brought rush hour traffic chaos to the city.

The woman was spotted on the overpass at Belgrave Interchange shortly at 7am this morning.

Police closed part of the ring road between Lee Bank Middleway and Belgrave Middleway.

The woman who is believed to he in her 20s came down just after 8am before being taken to hospital.

Diversions were put in place while emergency services responded.

The road closures resulted in severe delays on the A4540 Ring Road, Hagley Road, Pershore Road, and Bristol Street.

"We wanted a safe conclusion to this incident and I'd like to thank people for their patience as we worked to achieve this," said Inspector Christopher Gittins from Birmingham Police.

Delays are now clearing.
