Birmingham New Road and Black Country Route crashes cause traffic chaos
A two-car smash caused severe delays on a major Black Country road this afternoon, in one of several accidents around the region.
Tailbacks were visible along the Birmingham New Road through Wolverhampton, Coseley and Dudley following the crash which saw the front bumpers of both cars smashed.
No one was injured following the incident which happened just after 12pm.
A grey VW Golf was in the middle of the Sedgley Road West junction while a grey Vauxhall Insignia had been pulled onto a neighbouring street.
Shattered glass and bodywork was strewn across the road, while police were in attendance to direct traffic.
The smash and a roadworks further down the Birmingham New Road saw traffic come to a standstill at the crossroads - which is manned by four-way traffic lights.
West Midlands Police spokesman, Billy Corrigan, said: "Police were called to a two-car smash at the junction of Sedgley Road West in Dudley. "There were no injuries obtained by either car involved."
The crash was one of several across the Black Country and Wolverhampton today as the aftermath of snow and sleet overnight made for hazardous driving conditions.
An early morning smash between a lorry and a car caused chaos on the Black Country Route.
The collision, which happened near to the Anson Road junction, led to major delays and lane closures, and caused damage to 50 metres of barrier on the busy road.
Temporary barriers have been installed, with traffic delays expected to continue into the evening.
No one was hurt in the crash.
Walsall Council spokesperson Rich Bolton said: "Temporary concrete barriers on the Wolverhampton-bound Black Country Route (A454) will be installed at lunchtime today.
"Both lanes heading in the Wolverhampton direction will be open before rush hour this afternoon.
"That will keep traffic flowing on the M6 and reduce congestion on the slip-roads.
"At 9am tomorrow morning, concrete barriers will be installed on the Walsall bound direction, with both lanes expected to be open by mid-afternoon tomorrow.
"We're also working with Highways England to alert drivers on the M6 about possible delays around Junction 10 this evening."
Two cars were involved in a crash on the exit ramp of junction 2 of the M54 at around 9am, while a crash at Trysall Road in Wolverhampton later partially blocked the road at Marnel Drive.
Traffic was gridlocked on numerous Wolverhampton roads during rush hour, including Stafford Road, Tettenhall Road, Cannock Road and Penn Road.
Wolverhampton council has been severely criticised by road users as a result, with many blaming congestion on the authority's gritting strategy.
