Drivers have been fined £296,000 for using bus lanes in Walsall since April, new figures reveal.

And just three quarters of fines dished out are actually being paid.

The cameras have hit motorists hard since they were brought in to catch out drivers illegally using the lanes.

It has been revealed that approximately 77 per cent of bus lane fines dished out were actually paid and £296,000 has been received from fines in this financial year so far.

The latest figure was revealed at this week's Walsall full council meeting after Blakenall councillor Peter Smith made enquires as to the receipts from bus lanes.

Councillor Smith said: "I hope this information puts motorists on their guard when it comes to using bus lanes.

"I think people will be surprised just how much money these cameras are netting."
