Severn Trent Water will be carrying out the scheme in the Parkfields area of the city from next month. It will see seven and a half miles of pipes replaced.

Work will be carried out by Amey and is due to start in the week of February 1 and last up to three months.

During the work, residents will be hit by a number of road closures, lasting between one and four weeks.

From February 1, Kent Road will be closed for up to four weeks, while Dixon Street will see three-way traffic lights for around a fortnight.

From February 8, Major Street will have three-way traffic lights for up to two weeks.

There will also be disruption from February 22 at Pond Crescent and Howell Road which will see signage and guarding for two to three weeks, while a road closure will be in place at Pond Lane for one to two weeks.

Then on March 9, Bradley Road will be closed for up to four weeks.

Severn Trent says the work will make water supplies in the area more reliable and residents are invited to a drop-in session on Wednesday to find out more about the plans.

Gareth Mead, from Severn Trent, said: "To make sure the water pipes in Parkfield continue to serve the community for years to come, we need to replace nearly seven and a half miles of pipes in the area.

"We'd encourage local people to come along, meet the team and learn more about our work, but to also give their views – after all, the people who know the area best are the local residents. This work could be tricky, and while we think we've found the best way of laying the pipes with the minimum impact, we're hoping that by talking to the community, they'll help us to find those little gems of information which can make a huge difference to our plans."

Mr Mead added: "We know that we may cause some inconvenience for the local community, and we'd like to apologise."

The session will be held at St Luke's Mission Hall in Pond Lane between 4pm and 7pm.
