Two taken to hospital after crash shuts Birmingham New Road

A man has been taken to hospital with a potentially serious head injury after a crash on Birmingham New Road.

The accident involving two cars happened at 7am on the Wolverhampton-bound carriageway of Birmingham New Road at its junction with Shaw Road, Coseley.

It happened in wet conditions after a night of rain.

Severe damage could be seen to the front end of both vehicles.

The incident caused major tailbacks

Police said the Wolverhampton-bound carriageway was likely to remain closed for some time to allow investigations.

Meanwhile motorists faced considerable delays, with major tailbacks in place along the route.

Claire Brown, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We have taken two patients to New Cross Hospital. A man in his 20s with minor head injuries and another patient, a woman who had got abdominal pain caused by seatbelt injuries."
