The queues at the new shop in Wolverhampton Road snaked around the side of the store before the opening at 8am today.

This slowed down traffic around Birchley Island in the morning rush hour.

Store manager Mike Carew said he was pleased by the initial response from customers.

Mr Carew, who was previously the manager at Aldi's Netherton store, has high hopes for the supermarket's success.

He said: "It's in a good location, with lots of houses nearby and also not far from the motorway.

"It's all ready to go now and it looks fantastic."
