Michelle Davies was at her home in Newhampton Road West, Whitmore Reans on July 2 this year when she saw her victim walk past on her way back to her own home a few doors down, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Following her through the open door, Davies, who had a knife, began shouting at the victim before pushing her over.

Mr Walter Bealby, prosecuting, said: "The defendant went towards her and and the victim used her feet to push the defendant away. Davies ended up on the floor, then got up and advanced on the victim, raising the knife. The victim raised her hand to protect herself."

She received a small cut to her hand, the court heard. At that point, the victim's 18-year-old son intervened, although he avoided injury.

Mr Bealby said: "The two of them scuffled over the knife which was taken from the defendant, who then picked up a vase and hit the woman to the head with it, causing a lump.

"The defendant started to cry and was allowed to leave."

Mr Bealby added: "When she was later interviewed by police she said she had argued with her daughter and when she saw the victim walk by her house she felt she had to act and picked up a knife.

"It is fair to say a lot of it doesn't make a great deal of sense. She seemed to be labouring under a number of delusions."

Mr Simon Hanns, defending Davies at the hearing on Monday, said his client claimed there had been 'considerable difficulty' between the two families in the past.

The 49-year-old, who appeared in court via video link from Foston Hall Prison in Derby, has a number of previous convictions, mostly for loitering for the purposes of prostitution, as well as battery, a racially aggravated assault by beating and assaulting a police officer.

During sentencing Judge Amjad Nawaz said there were 'alarming facts' in the case and an element of premeditation as Davies took the knife with her.

Mercifully, the injuries were minor.

He said: "You had armed yourself with a knife and launched an attack on her. You lunged at her with that knife."

Davies had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a knife.
