Boys aged 9 and 10 crash car through Wolverhampton garden wall
An estate car careered out of control through a wall and into a garden – with a 10-year-old boy at the wheel.
His nine-year-old brother was in the passenger seat of the blue Vauxhall when disaster struck in Kinfare Drive, Tettenhall Wood shortly before 6am yesterday.
It is believed they moved the vehicle from outside their home moments earlier but the ill-fated joy ride ended in tears less than 50 yards down the street, neighbours said.
The estate veered off the road, smashed through a low brick wall and ended up in the front garden of a nearby house.
The occupant was asleep in bed but a man living nearby, who asked not to be named, explained: "I heard the car revving and then hitting the wall.
"The older boy was sitting in the driver's seat. He was in pain, holding his stomach and ribs. I recognised him and guessed what had happened. His younger brother was out of the car and ran back home in tears.
"I did not try to move the older boy since I did not know how serious it was but by the time I had dashed back into my house to phone the ambulance he was out of the car as well. He was also crying. I assume they had been wearing seat belts or else I imagine the injuries would have been more serious."
The injured boy was treated by paramedics at the scene but was not believed to be badly hurt. Police and a fire crew from the Merridale Street station were called to the scene along with the ambulance. The car was badly damaged and had to be towed back to his home by the brothers' father.
Police confirmed: "We responded to an an incident in which a car had collided with a wall in Kinfare Drive shortly before 6am. Officers attended and inquiries are continuing."
