Express & Star comment: Uncertain times for our football clubs

These are uncertain and unsettling times for West Midlands football at the moment.

As a savvy businessman, Steve Morgan will know better than most that one is never on to a winner putting their house up for sale when the neighbours are on the market too.

Wolves now join West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa in the hunt for a new owner.

Mr Morgan's decision to step down from the board and sell his entire stake in Wolves means potentially years of uncertainty and a lack of investment.

For while we have no doubt he will keep his commitment to supporting the club financially, why would he want to complete the multi-million pound revamp of the Molineux?

It is in stark contrast to an interview he gave just last week in which he talked enthusiastically about the future.

Mr Morgan has clearly seen the city of Wolverhampton as a place he could do business and wanted to support.

His housing developments at Compton Park, coupled with his philanthropic involvement in projects such as The Way – the new 'youth zone' in the city centre, all pointed to someone in it for the long haul.

When Mr Morgan bought the club from the late, beloved Sir Jack Hayward he paid a nominal £10.

Sir Jack wanted a commitment Mr Morgan would invest £30 million. He has more than fulfilled that promise.

Yet in the eyes of many fans the level of investment in the best quality players was simply not enough.

Questions have been asked over how Wolves, tipped for a play-off place at the end of last season, have been sliding down the table.

Fans fear going where the club has been here before, following the terrible years of two consecutive drops.

Mr Morgan has long-said he would not stay if fans did not want him. Is this the Wolves boss being true to his word?

What will the uncertain future over the ownership of Wolves mean for its hopes now?

A swift sale to an owner committed to the club would be the best course of action.

Even if a buyer can be found, and with other clubs up for sale that is unlikely to happen for a while, everything hinges on what they will want to do with it.

Wolves have been through worse. They have gone to the brink of extinction in the past. Even so, difficult days lie ahead for Wolves.
