Bloxwich grass fire believed to have been started deliberately

Residents were warned to keep their windows closed as fire crews dealt with a grass blaze at playing fields in Bloxwich today, which was believed to have been started deliberately.

Firefighters were called to the site off Vernon Way at about midday.

The blaze involved grass cuttings and an area of land measuring around 131ft by 164ft.

Crews used hose reels and beaters to extinguish the flames.

Crew commander Richard Elliot, from Fallings Park fire station, said: "It was a field which had recently been cut. We suspect it was started deliberately."
