Moreton School in Bushbury is the subject of two separate investigations into exam conduct relating to Combined English and English Language exams that students sat in May.

Wolverhampton council launched an investigation in June into allegations that teachers had helped pupils to cheat during exams, with one students said to have been allowed to sit an exam the night before his classmates.

Exam board parent company Pearson has launched its own investigation into the claims. It is understood that a number of pupils have come forward to give evidence.

The exam board is withholding the results of 140 papers pending the conclusion of the investigations. Headteacher Carl Williams remains suspended from the school.

Paul Brown, spokesman for Wolverhampton council, said: "The headteacher of Moreton School remains suspended without prejudice, as per statutory procedure, pending the outcome of the independent investigation which is ongoing.

"The independent investigator's report is likely to be completed within the next few weeks and will also need to take into account the findings of a separate inquiry being conducted by the examination board concerned and so cannot therefore be concluded until this has been received."

Acting headteacher Andrew McNaughton said: "The welfare of our students is of paramount importance."
